Book Review: The First Day of Spring by Nancy Tucker
What the actual F--- did I just read? (in a good way, I think?)
I’m usually really picky about what I like in a book, and honestly this read was missing a lot of what I like, but not because it was bad, it was just different. I knew going into this this wasn’t my regular style of read. There wasn’t any major crazy surprises, but every single part from start to finish was a huge WTF moment (in a good way).
My honest review of The First Day of Spring
This book follows 8-year-old Chrissie Banks, and it gets right into why we’re reading about an 8-year-old kid. The book starts by showing us Chrissie murdering a 2-year-old kid named Steven in an abandoned house in the rougher part of the neighborhood. The narrative is done really well from the POV of a child.
The book then goes into following a 25-year-old woman jamed Julia, who we very quickly realize is adult Chrissie.
This means that we know Chrissie murdered a small child, and she is also a free woman. Not only is she a free woman, but she’s a single mother to a small child named Molly.
Overall this book bounces back and forth between Chrissie/Julia at ages 8 and 25 and we take both journeys while watching them merge into one.
I can’t give much more information without giving anything away, but I can say there are some trigger warnings. Child abuse in the form of neglect is a huge factor in this book, and there is a lot of childhood poverty. The coping skills children use in this book can be very triggering for someone who may have experienced similar situations.
What I can say is that when I started the book, for a good chunk of it, I felt one way, but by the end I started to feel another way. It shows that sometimes life is unfair, there is no right answer, and acceptance doesn’t always fix everything.
12,775 Days Updates:
Not much has changed, but tomorrow I’ll finally get my author copies of 12,775 Days! For some reason it takes over two weeks for me to get my copies at the author price but Amazon Prime members get theirs in 2 days (that’s still great though). I’ll be putting together the PR packages for the book and sending them off to my readers!
So excited.
I’ll leave you with this:
